It all started as a dream… that became reality in June 1982 with the inception of The Aladdin Foundation of Akron, Inc. Within a matter of a few days, a patient at Akron Children’s Hospital made the first wish to The Aladdin Foundation.
The Aladdin Foundation is a completely volunteer organization with no paid board members or volunteers. Most of the wish requests are channeled through the volunteer office at Akron Children’s Hospital (ACH), in cooperation with the hospital’s social workers. We are proud of our more than thirty-year affiliation with ACH. The foundation is especially thankful for the support of Akron Children’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer and President, Bill Considine, and Wendy Sawyer of the Volunteer Department at ACH. Requests generated external of Akron Children’s Hospital are welcomed and considered as well.
The requests that come to The Aladdin Foundation are based upon financial need, as identified or verified by the hospitals social workers, health care providers, or other non-family members familiar with a case. Requests must meet established criteria and are approved by the Board of Trustees. It is important to note that beneficiaries range in age from just after birth, up until and including age 18. The Aladdin Foundation is the only Akron-based 501(c)(3) performing this work on a local level. In order to perpetuate the mission, The Aladdin Foundation board is working to diversify and enhance its financial resources to continue to support our community for years to come.
None of the work that has ben done by The Aladdin Foundation would be possible with the thoughtfulness of the very kind and caring members of the communities the foundation serves.
Today The Aladdin Foundation … has fulfilled over 1,300 wish requests, giving just under $2 million in donations to date. All funds raised are used to significantly impact the quality of life for children with life-threatening illnesses.
